Moving house involves more admin than most people expect — beyond the physical move itself, there's a list of accounts, addresses and services to update. This page is a general checklist to work from.
Before the move
Booking removalists or a truck well ahead of your date, decluttering before you pack, and confirming access arrangements at both properties (parking, lift bookings, building manager notice) are all worth sorting out early, particularly for moves within busy capital cities.
Utilities and services
Electricity, gas, internet and water usually need to be connected at the new address and disconnected (or transferred) at the old one, ideally a few days ahead of moving day to avoid a gap. If you have solar at your current address, check what's involved in any system transfer or removal with your installer.
Updating your address
Key places to update your address include your bank, insurance providers, the electoral roll, your driver's licence, and Medicare and Centrelink if relevant — mail redirection through Australia Post can help catch anything missed in the first few weeks.
Settling in
Once you're in, checking smoke alarms, locating the electricity meter and water shut-off valve, and doing a basic safety check of the property are sensible first steps, especially in a rental where you may not be familiar with the building.
